Data is King: What NonStop Mission-Critical Applications Can Learn from Formula 1

“Getting through the mountains of data generated in Formula 1 can be a ‘needle in a haystack’ process for teams searching for performance ... In a sporting series as technologically cutting-edge as Formula 1, data has become king.”

For the NonStop community, this is throwing a spotlight on transaction processing in new ways. For every transaction initiated at a retailer, for instance, there is a need to know more about that end user (buying the product or service) in order to immediately up-sell something else. The time you have a customer in front of you can be very short, so retailers know the importance of leveraging those few minutes.

This is leading to a greater demand for data integration; retailers are looking to integrate analytics with transaction processing in real time. Yes, data integration! And data integration is how meaningful information is created ...

Of course we are all familiar with the need to ensure data is never lost or taken offline for any reason. We are now in situations where we are supporting two, three and sometimes as many as five or ten data centers where, behind the scenes, data is being replicated as part of an IT-wide approach to ensuring data availability and data integrity. DRNet has been involved in moving data for many decades now and is relied upon to ensure the degree of availability and integrity IT demands but of late.

DRNet has been enhanced and is making a strong case for consideration when it comes to data integration. To that end, what comes out of a NonStop system may end up in the data warehouses and data lakes that have become a priority for many enterprises seeking to gain meaningful insight about the behavior of their customers.

Moving data and moving files, delivering packages and integrating related content typically are just the starting point and as we tackle the opportunities we see arising with AI and deep learning, there is a real interest among the NonStop community in doing a lot more than just moving data and files.

As Formula 1 has so openly acknowledged, getting through the mountains of data generated by a Formula 1 car is proving overwhelming and teams that want to remain competitive are turning to AI. And as noted earlier, in the real-time mission-critical transaction-processing world where NonStop operates, the escalation in the velocity that data is arriving needs a lot more than simple programming routines – we need AI! As for the photo of the formula car above, yes, behind the dark glasses (and next to the tires), is George Steinbrenner IV of the Yankees baseball dynasty who is now a team owner in open wheel racing.

DRNet®/Unified for HPE Customers; On-Prem and “as a service,” NTI delivers!

HPE Discover 2021 may already be a distant memory for some but the messages that were coming out of the event will be resonating with the industry for quite some time. Looking beyond the “age of insight” and even HPE becoming “a world leading edge to cloud platform as a service company,” it is now very much a case of HPE bringing the cloud experience to the enterprise.   Not surprisingly, the byline for this story is the bigger message that the enterprise data center will be with us for a long time. This isn’t to say that cloud service providers will not be making their presence felt in these same data centers, one way or the other, but rather recent events have further reinforced the value proposition of being your own IT master.   With the cloud experience coming to a data center near you, enterprises can benefit from the best of both worlds. The security and robustness from on-prem computing together with all the flexibility that comes with cloud experiences. For th...

NTI – it’s a hybrid IT world where DRNet contributes!

Where HPE is taking NonStop today isn’t proving too surprising for the NonStop community. In fact, where NonStop is headed is a direction sorely needed by NonStop customers, big and small. The first step in the journey for NonStop came with the port of NonStop to x86, the migration of the interconnect from proprietary ServerNet to InfiniBand (IB) and more recently, to RDMA over Converged Ethernet (RoCE), and then a second step that saw an even bigger shift for NonStop as HPE complemented current support for physical machines with support for NonStop of virtual machines. Yes, NonStop is on a journey and that journey is going to better align NonStop with the major initiatives within HPE to simplify a data center’s transformation to hybrid IT. Under newly-elevated HPE CEO, Antonio Neri’s, direction HPE has divided itself into three core businesses. The major business (and the most relevant for the NonStop community) is called Hybrid IT and it is comprised of the compute, storage, and d...
